The Lord of the Flies

The Lord of the Flies
(book length: 248)

By: William Golding

Genre: Adventure, Fiction

The Lord of the Flies is an adventure . The story takes place on an island where the only people on it are survivors from a transport plane that crash-landed there. The survivors, English school-boys all under the age of 15, struggle to --- with all of the new responsibilities they have to face to keep themselves alive. They elect a leader by the name of Ralph, who is one of the oldest, and more mature of them all. Ralph tries to keep order and civilization among the children. His "sidekick" is a chubby boy who's nickname is Piggy. Although he is intelligent, he is the last on the survival chain, and often annoys and slows the group down. Ralph's rival is also one of the elders, and is the leader of the choir by the name of Jack. Jack tries to acquire power by means of savagery and viciousness, and leads the group towards a downfall into a primitive state.

As they hunt, build huts, and try to survive, they explore the island in hope of rescue, but don't find any, and begin to question the persons in charge. The younger member of the group are easily persuaded, and they begin to take sides

There are two main points that Golding was trying to show the world when he wrote this book. The first would be that when there are no rules, consequences, and order, people only seek power and only help themselves to succeed. The other main point was that children who don't know how the world works, aren't fit to lead. They do things that they want to do instead of what needs to be done to survive.

Golding wrote this book magnificently, and includes lots of detail to make it seem as if you are sitting less then 10 feet away, and watching what happens as these band of children try to survive long enough to get rescued. The story takes so many twists, and has an amazing ending. It is almost impossible to put down Lord of the Flies. If you like the adventures of Robinson Crusoe, then this book should be the next on your reading list.
